Kale Crisps - Healthy junk food?! - Foodie Friday

Today I am going to show you how to turn Kale into salty, crunch yet still super healthy crisps. This is for people who want to get more veg into their diet, everybody could benefit from that. Kale is one of the best choices it’s a cruciferous vegetable like broccoli. This means its full of beneficial nutrients and cancer fighting compounds. The idea of eating a lot of raw Kale is not that appealing to me either but luckily (even if you don’t like Kale or leafy greens in general), I’m going to show you how to make it taste good. I promise you Kale crisps are the way forward, everyone loves kale crisps.

Kale has this amazing property that once baked it becomes a crunchy texture just like a Crip does. You can flavour them too, and kale doesn’t have that overwhelming green bitter taste once baked. This is no effort at all takes a minute of prep time and a maximum of 20 minutes baking time. I like to use bagged Kale, it just means the prep time has already been halved, as it been destalked already. All you do is wash and dry your Kale, I use about a third of the bag. Then spread an even layer onto a baking tray, don’t overload the tray with kale as it will not bake properly. Nobody wants raw and burnt Kale as the outcome … Drizzle with an oil of your choice and sprinkle with a little sea salt.

A little salt goes a long way you don’t want it to be overpowering. You can also add more spices if you like, the choice is all yours. This makes such a tasty sin free treat. Of course, the best thing about this recipe is you don’t really need to add any salt if you're using a lot of these different spices. You’ll find that tastes fine without it but I use a good quality Himalayan Sea Salt. This is a pink salt, and that’s all the beneficial trace minerals that are still intact. So as far as spices go you can use any you like as it doesn’t take much to flavour the kale. Cayenne pepper is a good choice of you like it hot and spicy. If there is one spice you want to use in your diet, it’s got to be turmeric. It’s one of the most studied, the curcumin is an ingredient in turmeric, and it’s got more health benefits and research behind it then any other spice out there. Everything from anti-inflammatory, cancer protective effects, cardio vascular benefits. It is the most efficient for good health, fat loss or just longevity. Garlic powder is also good as it adds a lot of flavour, dried herbs and spices pack more of a punch than fresh as their flavours are stronger.



I will then pop them into to a preheated oven at 150 degrees Celsius for 15-20 minutes until crisp. Just keep an eye out you don’t want them to burn as they will turn slightly bitter. The idea is not to overcook it and loose some of the nutrients. This is the final product, it’s a very crunch still green in colour and tastes amazing. If you like crispy seaweed this tastes the same … You can still spice it up with more seasoning after it comes out of the oven too. This is a fantastic healthy snack. It’s one of those foods that you just keep eating more and more like crisps. Only instead of something that’s going to make you fatter because you keep eating it, it’s going to add to your health.
